Are you looking to hit a reading goal in 2024? Maybe you’re just hoping to read ONE good book this year. Maybe you’re trying to read 100 books this year! Whatever your reading goal, one thing you need is BOOKS! Books can be very expensive and that may hinder your ability to read as many as you like!

I’m hoping to provide you with some tips and tricks to read more without breaking the bank!

  1. Utilize your local library!

If you’re paying local taxes, you’re already paying for your local library, so you might as well take advantage of it!

I always go to my library website and look ahead for books that aren’t out yet and get them placed on hold ASAP! This way, I can usually read new realease books shortly after they are released!

Many libraries also have a “lucky day” shelf in the library where they shelve popular books/new releases for a shorter checkout time- always worth checking out!

My library uses both LIBBY and HOOPLA for e-books, audiobooks, cds, movies, etc. Both of these apps allow you to listen to audiobooks and read e-books for free right from your phone!
  2. Find a Free Little Library near you!

Here’s a link to the map: MAP!

From their website: “Welcome to the Little Free Library map where you can find Little Free Libraries near you! Choose from three main search options and use the search filters to refine your results. Search by Near Me to find libraries based on your current location. Search by Location to search by any city, state/province or postal code. Search by Charter Number if you know a library’s unique charter number.”
  3. Netgalley

Netgalley.com is a site that booksellers and authors use to promote new books! Readers/reviewers are given a free e-book in exchange for an honest review on their site. Some publishers/authors require that a user have a blog/social media site and some are fine with just Goodreads and Amazon/Barnes & Nobles reviews!

There are two ways to get books on Netgalley. The first way is by clicking “request” on a certain title and then having the publisher approve your request giving you access to an e-copy of the book. The second way is by downloading a book from the “read now” section. Books under the “read now” section do not require a publisher approval- this means anyone with a Netgalley account can automatically download and read the e-book or listen to the audiobook!

This is such a fun way to get free books, promote books you love, help authors/publishers and really start to build your base for your reviews!
  4. Thrift stores/Facebook Marketplace

I have found SO SO many good books (even brand new releases) at my local thrift stores. This takes a little bit of patience because you’re likely not going to have a great haul every time, but the high is worth it when you do!
  5. Goodreads Giveaways

This one is also a shot in the dark but it has paid off for me several times! If you’re on Goodreads.com, you click on “browse” and then “giveaways” and there are always literally HUNDREDS to enter! You may just get lucky!

However you find your books, I hope you READ and ENJOY what you’re reading!

What are some other ways to keep reading affordable?
