πHave you ever read a book that was extremely difficult to read because of the subject matter but that was undeniably powerful and thought-provoking?
πA few of those books for me have been:
πBeartown by Frederick Backman
πNotes on Your Sudden Disappearance by Alison Espach
πMiracle Creek by Angie Kim
πI’ll now add Day One by Abigail Dean to that list.
πHad I known what this book was about before I read it, I probably would have skipped it thinking I wouldn’t be able to handle it. But this was so well done and delicately handled, I’m glad I didn’t.
πI want to handle this review as delicately as possible and simultaneously set your expectations for this book while also not scaring you away from it.
πFrom the publisher synopsis: “Stonesmere is an English seaside suburb defined by poignant traditions passed from generation to generation, and the bonds of small town community spirit. But when a lone gunman disrupts a school assembly, he sets of a chain of events that throws this close-kint town into turmoil.”
πThis book follows the perspectives of several people and how they are affected by this unthinkable tragedy. It could also accurately be described as a character study on grief. Many of these characters will be unforgettable for me.
πWhile there are some shocking reveals along the way and mysterious elements, do not go into this book expecting a thriller. This is so much more than that.
πIf any of the books I listed above have had an impact on you, I’d definitely recommend reading this one.
πThis is Abigail’s second book. Her first was GIRL A which was a @bookofthemonth pick when it first came out and it’s been sitting on my shelf for years but now I REALLY want to read it!
πHer writing really sucked me in and I can’t wait to read whatever she writes next!
πIf you have any specific questions about content, please feel free to DM me. I’m keeping things here intentionally vague.
